Fronteras, Hudud, Borders (2019)

This project was born out of finding commonalities within home between myself as a Latinx Chicana from the borderlands, and my collaborator, Hayat Abu Samra, a Palestinian raised in Jordan whose family has been displaced by the occupation. Our goal was not to equate both territories as facing the same issues, but rather to see the effects of militarization, colonization, and trauma and they are both similar and different. The work consists of a video made of found footage of these respective spaces and collected interviews of those who were willing to talk about their experiences and perceptions with us. The video itself was then projected outdoors around New York City on found walls, where viewers were able to navigate through the installation. These interactions were then recorded and shared alongside the initial video at our public talk/open conversation From Palestine to Mexico: Fronteras, Hudud, Borders at The Bowery Poetry Club.
